Environmental information disclosure is an important way for companies to fulfil their environmental responsibilities. However, irregularities in disclosure, ambiguity and selective disclosure behaviour are still prevalent. This paper empirically examines the impact of product market competitive position on the quality of corporate environmental information disclosure using Chinese A-share listed companies as a sample from 2009 to 2022.The results of the study show that the increase in the competitive position of an enterprise's product market significantly inhibits the quality of environmental information disclosure; in particular, the increase in the competitive position has a more significant negative effect on the quality of environmental information disclosure of non-key polluting enterprises, enterprises in the growth period, and non-state-owned enterprises. This paper provides new research perspectives on the balance between market competition and environmental responsibility of enterprises, while enriching the research on the economic consequences of the competitive position of enterprises' products in the market, with important practical significance.
